What is a Comforter?
For
those who grew up with just sheets and a blanket
and perhaps a thin bedspread, comforters are a
great luxury.
In fact, all of the
luxury bedding that is now available today for
purchase is an amazing treat. Those who lived in
times past would not believe the level of
comfort that is now available to us. They would
be very envious of such indulgent and contented
sleep.
Comforters have been part of life since the
early days. They were hand sewn in the United
States, as well as in parts of Europe and the
United Kingdom. In some English speaking
countries, a comforter is known as a duvet.
The word duvet is of French origin, thus,
pronunciation is whatever your community decides
on. Generally, the accepted pronunciation is
“dove-ay.” However, in the United States, the
two terms may or may not be interchangeable.
That depends to a great extent on the region of
the country.
In times past, and often still currently,
comforters are made from whatever fabric is
available. Sometimes an old blanket or a worn
comforter was pressed into service as the
filler, then attached to whatever kind of cotton
fabric that could be obtained for the top and
backing.
It may be that wealthier families used silk for
the top of the comforter, but silk did not wear
well then, and it remains less durable today.
No longer does a comforter have to drag on the
floor around a twin bed or look stranded in the
middle of a king size bed. Those of you
who are searching for a comforter for your beds
today now have many choices, including a choice
of sizes.
The comforter
should be large enough and pliant enough to
drape well over the bed, so it stays on the bed
if the backing fabric tends to be slick. In
addition to cotton and silk, fabrics used in
construction may include polyester, wool from
various animals (including animals other than
sheep), goose down, feathers or a combination of
those materials.
