The Modern Feather Bed

Often, feather beds conjure up pictures of old fashioned living and the heirlooms passed down from generation to generation.

Today, many people have been pleasantly surprised to find that it is possible to purchase brand new feather beds. Today, feather beds are made of thoroughly cleaned feathers, which minimizes sneezing and other allergic reactions often caused by dust.

The feather beds are often encased in a tightly woven fabric, usually cotton. To keep feathers in place, tightly stitched channel baffling usually runs the length of the mattress. If possible, it is best to purchase a feather bed with a removable cover. You will be able to wash the cover and let it dry thoroughly. It is not recommended that one take the mattress apart and clean it. It would be very impractical to attempt to do so since frantic re-stuffing would be very unsuccessful. You may not have a choice of the cover when choosing the luxury mattress that your heart is set on. Almost all of the mattresses will be well made and come with a substantial warrantee.

As in times past, a feather bed must be treated with great care so it will not develop mold or rot. Be sure to avoid plastic covering of any kind because the feathers and fabric must be able to breathe. If your mattress does not have a removable cover, you can spot clean very carefully. Be sure to use a light touch if cleaning is needed. You may have to locate a dry cleaner with experience in cleaning feather items. It may be difficult to find such a person, and it will certainly be an expensive job if you do find someone to do it. Getting the mattress to the dry cleaners or the dry cleaner to the house will have to be worked out between you and the person who may do the job.
