Luxury Down ComfortersMost luxury down comforters are made from goose down. Rarely, comforters
are filled with the down of the Elder Duck,
which is a protected species. The down of the
Elder Duck is hand harvested from nests when the
nests have been left vacant. Since the down from
the Elder Duck is rare and hard to find, the
price of down comforters with this fill is
extremely high. Luxury down comforters for the
average person are still rather expensive, at
least when they are made from the top quality
down, such as that which comes from Canadian
Hutterite farms. The down that is produced from geese that grow up in colder climates tends to be warmer as it has had to keep those geese warm during more extreme temperatures. Feathers are sometimes added to the down because larger comforters have a vast area to fill. When feathers are
added to the down, the cost can be lower. When
the added fill is the smaller, softer duck
feathers, the quills don’t poke through the
outside. Another filler used in less expensive
comforters is white goose down that comes from
Asia. Monograms can be either a source of
personal pride or an indication of ownership by
luxury hotels that order down comforters.
