Imported Down Duvets

Because tiny feathers get caught in the down, down duvets are rarely 100 percent down, no matter their country of origin.

Unfortunately, in many countries, there have been no labeling laws to protect the consumer against the manufacturer who puts whatever they want on the label and allows their supplier to put anything they want inside of the duvets they’re making and selling. Sometimes, down content may be 85 percent, or even less, with the remainder of the content being feathers, yet the label will incorrectly state that the content is 100 percent down.

Whether the country selling the down duvet is Canada, New Zealand, the United States or any other country where enlightened consumer watchdogs are pushing for change, countries are now being forced to be more open with their practices of reporting the contents of a comforter.  Some of those who have been fighting for change believe that too many customers have been taken advantage of for too long. Those manufacturers or vendors who do not comply with the newest labeling laws may face steep fines.

The consumer should not have a problem with the use of imported down, nor should the consumer have a problem with a duvet that may have some feathers in it. However, the consumer has the right to know what they are buying and the source of the materials. If they are well made, down duvets are lightweight and warm, with only the occasional feather poking through the cloth that was not tightly woven enough to prevent that. Even the tightly woven cloth still needs to breathe.

If a shopper is certain of what they’re buying, they will be more inclined to spend a fair amount of money on it, especially if it is meant to be a gift. With any luck, the duvet will arrive in a nice, sturdy box from the factory, however, if it is packaged in a clear zipper bag, wrapping it will take some time and creativity. Unwilling to face the fight of piecing wrapping paper together with tape, some gift givers do opt for a huge bow and wide ribbon. You can add another part to the gift, such as a thermal blanket, and use that as the “wrapping” for the gift and then add the ribbon and bow. It is sometimes literally necessary to think outside of the box.
