The Importance of Good Pillows

Although you may not think about them too much, pillows are a big part of our lives.

If you were to have to live without them, you would likely then discover how important they are. Whether we’re using a pillow to help us to get a good night’s sleep or to ease a sore back or neck or even a sore elbow, we are more attached to our pillows than we may think.
People, and even pets, find a great deal of relief at finding aches and hurts cushioned with a quality pillow. Both mind and body heal faster when pain is not an issue.

Comfortable and even luxurious bedding help the body to relax. When we find ourselves in a situation where we need a pillow, but one isn’t available, we invoke our creativity and make one from whatever is available, whether it be a folded sweater, a rolled jacket, a backpack or even a hymn book at church when the sermon seems a bit long and the pew seems to be as hard as a rock.

Pillows range in firmness from firm to medium to soft. They are available in all sizes. You can purchase a body length bed pillow, floor pillows, a throw pillow for the couch or tiny and delicate pillows for newborn babies. Hypoallergenic and anti allergy pillow covering fabrics are now being manufactured, to the delight and relief of many. These special fabrics provide a helpful barrier against dust that may cling to improperly cleaned feathers in some pillows or against household dust in which millions of living dust mites may thrive unseen.

Another thing that can help in the fight against allergic reactions is to change the laundry detergent you are using. Try a detergent that does not contain perfume. To help both citizens and strangers alike to appreciate their heritage, museums throughout the world often display artifacts from a nation’s past, including the tools that were once used. These tools include spinning wheels and looms to make textiles.

Visitors to the American Textile History Museum in Lowell, Massachusetts can watch classic and power looms in operation as they produce fabrics that are turned into coverlets, pillows and many other household items.

During those early days, pillows were made by hand sewing, in the same way other items of clothing and household furnishings were made, whether the pillows were utilitarian or whether they were considered luxurious. Now, to provide strong seams that retain shape and keep either natural or synthetic stuffing securely in place, top quality pillows are often machine stitched. If you’ve had your pillow for a long time, and it is a favorite, that comfortable pillow seems nearly irreplaceable. Did your grandma ever mention her dream pillow or her headache pillow? These pillows have actually been around for centuries.

A headache pillow often used lavender, mint, eucalyptus and other soothing herbs. Those soothing aromas were intended to be inhaled. A dream pillow used many different combinations of herbs, depending on the type of dreams that were desired.
