Take the time to determine the amount of warmth that you require

There are many different types of down comforters, at many different price levels.

You should take some time to determine the amount of warmth that you require prior to purchasing your comforter.

Down comforters are one of the most popular bed coverings due to their ability to provide a great deal of warmth while at the same time being light and cozy. Think about the climate where you live when considering which type of down to purchase. Those in colder climates will probably prefer warmer down from geese which live in northerly climates. Those who live in warm or moderate climates may prefer down which has been produced by geese in more moderate temperatures. Your location and climate will determine which type of down is right for you.

Elderdown, produced by the Elder duck from Iceland, was once thought to be the only acceptable fill material for down comforters. The supply of Elderdown, however, has been dramatically impacted by the protection of the Elder duck from commercial harvesting. Modern day Elderdown is in short supply and must be hand harvested from abandoned nests. This has dramatically increased the cost of Elderdown products. These days Elderdown comforters are luxury items that only a select few can afford.

Those looking for a more affordable alternative might like the larger down comforters. These comforters are much less costly and include a greater mix of feathers in with the down. One downside of these comforters is the possibility of feathers poking through the comforter cover and scratching you.

The fill power of down can be determined by consulting the rating number which indicated the amount of down clusters in the filler. It is almost impossible to remove all the feathers from down, so even a product rated 100% goose down is bound to have a few feathers mixed in. You have a very high quality comforter if the fill power is at 95%. The labeling laws in the United States allow for a tag claiming 100% fill power for comforters that have as little as 75% down. This being said, it can be very difficult to find out the actual fill power of a particular comforter.

It is a good idea to find out what type of down you are purchasing. This will help you determine if you are getting the best value for your money. Although only those in very cold climates will actually require down with the greatest insulating qualities, it is always a good idea to purchase the finest quality comforter that you can afford.
