Carefully examine the label of a down comforter

When you are looking to help keep your body heat in and the cold out you are unlikely to find anything that works better than goose down.

On a cold night there is almost nobody who would reject a goose down comforter covered with a nice duvet cover. Specially designed fabrics are used to create goose down comforters. These comforters are also carefully sewn into baffles to keep the down in place. The down provides a great deal of insulation and warmth, after all this is its original purpose for the geese.

To protect your investment and add to its attractiveness you will want to cover your down comforter with a duvet cover. This will add a nice touch to the overall décor of your room. While there are duvet covers and comforters available at many different price levels, be careful about purchasing one just because it is inexpensive. The lower priced down comforters are usually not as high in quality or as warm.

Poorly constructed comforters will allow the down to gather at the edges, which leaves nothing on top to keep you warm during the night. Higher quality down comforters make use of baffles to keep the down in place and you warm and cozy all night long. You can find a high quality down comforter at a great price by keeping a close eye on sales flyers and end of season clearance sales.

You will want to carefully examine the label of a down comforter you are considering purchasing if you are prone to allergies. Dust mites are naturally repelled by comforters containing 100% goose down. This makes them the best fit for those with allergies. Many people have allergic reactions to comforters that contain a high percentage of feathers mixed in with the down. This is true of both down comforters and feather beds. Those with allergies should also stay clear of down comforters that contain a blend of Hungarian goose down and syriaca clusters, which is a down like made from the milkweed plant.

The best down comforters are made from Siberian goose down. When you are looking at the thermal properties of down, nothing can beat those of the down produced by the Siberian goose. Elderdown is another excellent type of down, used to produce some of the warmest and most luxurious comforters out there. These light weight comforters are very warm, and very expensive.

The North Atlantic area of Iceland is the only place to find the Elder duck which produces Elderdown. A mother duck will pluck her down and use it to keep her nest warm in this very cold climate. The down will be hand harvested at the end of nesting season when the nest has been abandoned. This labor intensive process with very small yields makes Elderdown the rarest material that is used for down comforters.
